How rough is the crossing for children?
It is open water, 50 to 90 minutes each way, and it can be bumpy. Some children love the speed; some get sick. Give a remedy suitable for their age before you board, not once the boat is moving.
Sit near the back and outside if you can, where the motion is gentlest, and keep eyes on the horizon. The big catamarans have covered cabins, which help with sun but can feel stuffy on a rough day.
Which boat suits which family?
- Toddlers and babies: the Sunbay Marina private charter. Infants sit on a lap, strollers are accommodated, and only your group is aboard.

Is the ferry day good for families?

It is also the cheapest fare, at $145 a person, which adds up for a big family. The trade is length: ten hours, with a 1 hour 30 minute ferry each way and lunch to buy or bring.
Is a private boat worth it for a family?
Often, yes. The private boats cost $1,500 to $2,500 for up to six, which for a family of five or six can be close to the shared fares per head. You set the pace, the crew watches your children, and there is a floating mat and shade.

What about alcohol on board?
Most boats serve rum drinks and beer as part of the fare. The Ceiba snorkel boat sets its drinking age at 18, and the Isleta Marina boat does not allow you to bring your own alcohol. If you want a quieter boat with children, a private charter lets you set the tone.
How do children snorkel safely?
Start with a flotation belt or vest, a mask that fits, and a calm beach. The ferry day provides a flotation belt with the gear, and the guides stay in the water. On the boats, ask the crew for a vest before you get in.

What does a family day look like, hour by hour?
Most boats check in between 7:30am and 8:15am, so a family staying in San Juan leaves before 7. The crossing takes 50 to 75 minutes on most boats. Then comes the snorkel, usually an hour or more, and lunch on board or on the beach.
The afternoon is the beach: two to five hours, depending on the boat. That is the part children remember, so bring a bucket and spade if you have room. The ride back puts most boats at the dock by mid-afternoon.
On the ferry day, the rhythm is different: a 1 hour 30 minute ferry each way, a minibus across the island, a guided snorkel and three hours at Flamenco Beach. It is the longest day, at ten hours, and the one that suits older children best.
Where do you eat?
On the boats, lunch is part of the fare, from a deli buffet to a grilled lunch on the private days. Check that the menu suits a fussy eater, and pack snacks anyway.

What should you pack for children?
- A swimsuit worn under clothes, a rash guard and a hat.
- Reef-safe sunscreen, reapplied after every swim.
- Water shoes for rocky entries and hot sand.
- Snacks and water, especially on the ferry day, where lunch is not included.
- A dry change of clothes and a towel, which several fares leave out.
How long a day can a young child manage?
Six to seven and a half hours is a full day for a toddler, and the ferry day's ten hours is a lot. For young children, a six-hour boat day leaves more energy for the beach.
